Data consulting · Marine biologist & data analyst

p < 0.05 is where the thinking starts.

Sampling design, statistics and GIS for environmental and marine projects, from a marine biologist who has worked underwater as a professional diver for almost 20 years, and with predictive models for over ten years, starting with a degree thesis. For organisations and NGOs in Portugal, Spain and Latin America.

§1 · Services

Four ways I can help

I can help before fieldwork (the sampling plan), after it (analysis and figures), or both. Every choice comes with a written justification you can hand to a reviewer.

01

Statistical analysis

Experimental design, hypothesis testing and modelling, with clear reporting for decisions and for publications.

More on statistical analysis →

02

Environmental impact

Baseline and monitoring studies, impact assessment and biodiversity indicators, with the method and its limits documented so a reviewer can check them.

More on environmental impact →

03

Data management

Scattered spreadsheets and field records restructured into one database, with consistent codes, validation checks and a data dictionary.

04

GIS

Mapping and spatial analysis, with a focus on coastal and marine environments.

§2 · Selected work

The problem, and how I approached it

A few representative projects. Client names are kept confidential.

Case 01

Coastal GIS

Problem
Coastal data spread across sources, with no shared spatial picture.
Approach
Spatial mapping and analysis of the coastal environment in one consistent GIS.

Case 02

Biodiversity data analysis

Problem
Raw survey data that could not yet answer the ecological question.
Approach
From raw survey records to robust, documented ecological indicators.

Case 03

Database restructuring

Problem
Inconsistent datasets that nobody could query with confidence.
Approach
Redesigned into a correct, queryable database with clear documentation.

Case 04

Sampling design consultancy

Problem
Fieldwork about to start without a plan that matched the question.
Approach
Advice on sampling methods so the data answers the question before anyone gets wet.

§3 · About

From the reef to the dataset

Diving, an ecology lab and factory floors. In each of those places my job ended up being the same: checking whether the data could actually answer the question being asked.

  1. 01 · Isla de Margarita, Venezuela

Marine biology, and the sea as a workplace

Studied marine biology at the Universidad de Oriente and started diving, which became a profession for almost 20 years. The degree thesis (almost two years of work, presented in 2015) estimated how many sea anemone species Venezuela has, with predictive models fitted to species accumulation curves from 50 surveys. From 2011 to 2014, also taught there as a lecturer assistant in basic ecology and marine ecology.

  2. 02 · Research

    Two peer-reviewed publications

  3. 03 · Portugal

    Ecology laboratory, University of Aveiro

Moved to Portugal and worked with ecological data as a research assistant in the ecology laboratory of the University of Aveiro (2015–2018).

  4. 04 · Industry

    Textile and food manufacturing

Improving processes with data on the factory floor. Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.

§4 · Beyond work

A reef tank, logged like a field station

I’m setting up my first marine aquarium: water chemistry, logs and a lot of patience. It’s a small piece of the sea to look after. I document it on Instagram.

Tell me about your data.

A few lines are enough: the question you need answered, the data you already have and when you need it. I reply in English, Portuguese or Spanish.
